I am a 23 year old Hip hop dancer, currently teaching Hip Hop at Dainfern College, under the ‘Dance Sport School League (DSSL)’ and I have a few High school students that take lessons with me on a weekly basis. I’m also a High Performance level student at ‘Dance Web Studios’
I started dancing while I was in Sunday school, 2004/ 2005. My brother was the Sunday school teacher and he would always teach us dance routines that we would perform in front of the church, once a month. That’s when I fell in love with the art. Sunday became my favourite day of the week.
A few months later, I formed a group with some of the friends from my area. We started performing at Birthday parties around the township; most of them were for friends or mutual friends. That ship sailed smoothly for the duration of our primary school period then it went under as soon as we all got to high school.
I continued dancing in my High school’s talent shows and year end productions. In grade 10, I was assisting in creating choreography for the school’s Art events and year end productions.
Post High school, I started teaching my family friends’ kids in my spare time, while I was studying filmmaking and TV production at the ‘African Academy of Cinematic Arts’. I graduated ‘filmmaking and TV production’ then I started focusing on my dancing; participating in dance competitions like World of Dance and also exploring the South Korean entertainment industry because dance is a vital part of that industry.

As a dancer, I get overwhelmed by happiness and other unexplainable feelings when I see improvement in my dancing. However, those feelings are nothing in comparison to how I feel when I see my students improving and gaining self confidence in the process. That is the reason why I want to do this for the rest of my life. Nothing is as empowering as witnessing yourself improve and becoming a better version of yourself. I want the next person to experience that.
My goal is to own a dance studio situated in Meyerton, the township I grew up in, to try and prevent what happened to those friends that stopped dancing when they got to high school, from happening again. They just always got up to no good because they had a lot of time on their hands, with nothing to do.
I want to give this generation of kids in that township something to do, something to look forward to after school, something to work towards, in order to avoid idle hands and inspire creative minds.
