LINDSAY SETLEMA

Lindsay is a professional Hip hop dancer and also a High Performance level student at ‘Dance Web Studios’

He started dancing while he was in Sunday school in 2005. His brother was the Sunday school teacher and would always teach them dance routines that they would perform in front of the church, once a month. That’s when he fell in love with the art. Sunday became his favourite day of the week.

A few months later, he formed a group with some of the friends. They started performing at birthday parties around the township; most of them were for friends or mutual friends.

He continued dancing in his high school’s talent shows and year end productions. In grade 10, he was assisting in creating choreography for the school’s Art events and year end productions.

Post high school, he started teaching his family friends’ kids during his spare time, while he was studying filmmaking and TV production at the ‘African Academy of Cinematic Arts’. He graduated in filmmaking and TV production and then started focusing on his dancing; participating in dance competitions like World of Dance and also exploring the South Korean entertainment industry because dance is a vital part of that industry.

Lindsay did his A.I.D.T Intermediate hip-hop exam during 2021 and achieved a distinction with 99%. He is currently busy with his A.I.D.T hip-hop associate teacher's diploma.

MISSION STATEMENT

As a dancer, I get overwhelmed by happiness and other unexplainable feelings when I see improvement in my dancing. However, those feelings are nothing in comparison to how I feel when I see my students improving and gaining self confidence in the process. That is the reason why I want to do this for the rest of my life. Nothing is as empowering as witnessing yourself improve and becoming a better version of yourself. I want the next person to experience that.

My goal is to own a dance studio situated in Meyerton, the township I grew up in, to try and prevent what happened to those friends that stopped dancing when they got to high school, from happening again. They just always got up to no good because they had a lot of time on their hands, with nothing to do.

I want to give this generation of kids in that township something to do, something to look forward to after school, something to work towards, in order to avoid idle hands and inspire creative minds.
